Iron District Plan

Scranton, PA
The goal of this project was to develop an cultural and artistic link between the Downtown and South Scranton creating an important destination for heritage tourism as well as commercial and economic activity.

Working with a consortium of partners, this comprehensive vision provides a guide for public and private initiatives which, when woven together through public policy and targeted actions, will result in a vibrant new neighborhood.

The Iron District Comprehensive Plan proposes to act in concert with a Green Infrastructure Plan and as the nexus between the South Side Revitalization Plan, currently underway by the United Neighborhood Center, and Downtown Scranton’s DCED Main Street project. At the heart of this district is the Historic Iron Furnaces, which played a significant role in Scranton’s inception. With the emergence of education, healthcare and biotech in the region and working in collaboration with other revitalization initiatives, the Iron District represents a new future for the City, providing a venue that will combine history, culture, and entertainment in a diverse, mixed-use neighborhood.

This coordinated investment strategy aims not only to preserve Scranton’s industrial heritage, but also to fuel long-term economic resilience through place-based development. By fostering opportunities for artists, small businesses, and cultural programming, the Iron District will serve as a catalyst for inclusive growth, attracting residents and visitors alike while reinforcing the city’s identity as a center for innovation rooted in history.
