Scranton Gateways

Scranton, PA
The goal of this project was to reimagine and reinforce the identity of Scranton through a cohesive, meaningful, and visually striking gateway and signage system that celebrates the city’s rich history while welcoming visitors and residents into its vibrant urban core.

The project begins by grounding the concept in Scranton’s historical legacy, emphasizing the city’s role in powering the Industrial Revolution through coal, iron, and rail. Scranton was the first city in the nation to operate an electric trolley system, earning the nickname “The Electric City,” and it played a part in the history of recorded music when Capitol Records pressed vinyl in the Button Factory. These achievements form the foundation of a design narrative that honors the past while signaling a dynamic future.

The gateway and signage system introduces a bold visual language that is both contemporary and rooted in place. The vertical striations in the design are inspired by the silhouettes of the surrounding mountains that define the valley, while also evoking the appearance of coal seams, digital soundwaves—symbolizing Scranton’s contributions to both industrial and musical innovation. This dual meaning bridges the city’s past with its evolving identity, connecting nature, history, and technology in a single modern expression, while the clean aesthetic and black and white color story are a subtle nod to the city’s relationship with the show “The Office”.

Renderings show the signage during both day and night, demonstrating its strong graphic presence and visual clarity in all conditions. Whether arching over the Biden Street underpass or standing tall along pedestrian corridors like Wyoming and Olive, each installation becomes a landmark moment—welcoming, orienting, and instilling civic pride.

To extend the identity beyond the built environment, the project also explores brand translation through merchandise. T-shirts, mugs, keychains, and other items carry the same distinctive design elements, giving residents and visitors a way to show their Scranton pride and further promote the city’s character.

This gateway initiative is more than just signage—it is a strategic placemaking effort that honors Scranton’s legacy, reflects its landscape, and connects its past to a future defined by creativity, innovation, and community pride.
