When the iconic Water Street Bridge, long a vital link between Pittston and West Pittston, was deemed structurally unsound and slated for demolition, both communities saw an opportunity to create something far more than a conventional replacement.
They envisioned a bridge that would embody their strength, honor their fallen heroes, and draw people to experience the beauty of connection itself. The result is The Bridge of the Brave, an esplanade of hope and remembrance that gracefully spans the river, uniting two communities bound by shared resilience. Modern and deeply symbolic, its undulating form mirrors the flow of the river below, evoking the flow of water and the arc of a firefighter’s hose, a powerful symbol of life-giving force and life-saving force. Beneath, vertical metal sentinels hint at the flickering of flames and the raw, jagged resonance of fire, embodying both comfort and danger.
At its entrance, a bold “Bridge of the Brave” sign and exhibit panels honor two fallen firefighters one from each community, John Lombardo and Leonard Insalaco II, sharing their story of courage and sacrifice. The crossing invites deeper discovery through panels rhythmically spaced along the path, each celebrating individuals who built and protected their communities, connecting past, present, and future.
More than a bridge, it is a gathering place. A broad promenade invites art walks, festivals, and pop-up events, transforming it into a vibrant community space. Each crossing feels different—mornings bring dappled light and optimism, while twilight signals reflection.
By day, shifting shadows move with the sun and seasons. By night, the bridge transforms into a canvas of light, casting brilliant reflections on the water. Brief evening illuminations ripple like water, flicker like fire, and then settle into a steady glow—a beacon of strength and resilience for all to witness.
